Basically, it is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Researchers discovered years ago that plants absorbed essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. The soil acts as a reservoir, but the soil itself is not necessary to the growing process. Once the miner nutrients are introduced artificially and dissolved in water, the plant’s roots can absorb them, making soil irrelevant. There are two main types of techniques, solution culture and medium culture, and although there are varied ways to carry out each technique, almost any terrestrial plant will grow using a hydroponics system.
